Howdy

Dogs belong…

on those rugged & remote backcountry trails,
endlessly swimming in ice-cold snowmelt streams,
sleeping by a crackling fire under a star-studded sky,
& sitting by our side as the sun sets on that far horizon.

Two people sitting inside an orange camping tent in a forest, surrounded by trees. They are smiling, with dogs beside them, and camping gear is visible around the tent.

If you've ever loved a dog that craves adventure just like you, I get it.

My dogs are happiest in those wide, epic landscapes too. Whether there are years of adventures still ahead or the trail has slowed, capturing that free and adventurous lifestyle matters.

Let's honor the bond that has been shaped by every trail you’ve shared.

A line of rugged, rocky mountains under a black sky.
An American black bear being examined on a green stretcher outdoors by wildlife management officers in uniform, with tools and equipment nearby, and a white pickup truck parked in the background.

Growing up, I always knew I wanted a career working with animals & nature.

That led me to my first Park Ranger job right here in the Twin Cities.

After years of studying bat corridors, urban coyote packs, and river otter activity, it was time for a change. But first, there was an unforgettable little potato of a puppy up for adoption that I couldn't get out of my head.

After adopting Savannah, and later Juniper, we moved out west as I continued working for the National Park Service as a wildlife scientist. After many life-changing adventures and living across seven states, it was time to put the West in our rearview mirror and head back home to Minnesota.

Those years shaped not only my career, but the way I experience wild places and photograph them.

A woman wearing hiking gear, including a cap, backpack, and boots, stands outdoors in a forested area next to a sign for Sequoia National Park in California. She is smiling and posing with her hand on her hip, next to a wooden sign with the park's name and logo.

A woman walking her red dog along the wet sand of a beach with a large sea stack and rocky formation in the background, under a cloudy sky at Cannon Beach, Oregon.

My Norwegian heritage introduced me to friluftsliv

A philosophy I embraced long before I had a name for it. Friluftsliv is the simple idea of living a life connected to the outdoors.

When I picked up my first film camera in 2005, I naturally turned it toward the two things I loved most: nature and my family dog. That never changed. After adopting Savannah in 2019, she quickly commandeered my camera roll.

Today, that same Norwegian philosophy shapes the way I photograph dogs.

I want to capture them in their most natural state: excitedly exploring with a wagging tail, sniffing the air when the breeze changes, and sleepily watching the forest settle down as the sun sets.

After all, our dogs may be the best teachers of what it means to live a life guided by friluftsliv.
